Bring the calmness of yoga into your creative life. A physical meditation workshop designed to reduce your anxiety over making art.
For the first time, principles of Yoga and Somatic Education (Feldenkrais) are being integrated into the art of writing. Created by Madelyn Kent, former New York University Creative Writing faculty, Sense Writing uses physical and writing exercises to free up your creative voice, ease your nervous system, and refine your craft.
Over the course of a week, through physical, meditation, writing exercises – both at home and in-class – you will use your own life stories to explore the connection between your senses, emotions, and imagination.
- Fully inhabit the world of your writing through meditation and visualizations.
- Learn to set realistic creative goals and meet them effectively.
- Complete two to three pieces of creative non-fiction.
Borrowing from the tradition of Hatha Yoga, where the body is used to calm the mind, Sense Writing uses this state to help you access your voice. Because the focus of the approach is on what is felt and “tangible” rather than abstract ideas of “good writing,” writers of all levels and genres learn to quiet their inner critic and trust their impulses.
Used by artists of all genres to re-invigorate and find new dimensions to their art.
Madelyn Kent has served on the faculty of NYU/Tisch teaching playwriting, screenwriting, and memoir writing. The developer of “Sense Writing,” she has held workshops and classes in North America and abroad. She is certified in Feldenkrais Somatic Education/ATM.
Peggy Stafford, a two-time MacDowell fellow, has taught creative writing at the University of Washington’s Summer Program, and playwriting at Seattle Repertory Theatre and Brooklyn’s Fifth Avenue Committee. Madelyn and Peggy have worked together for several years initiating and creating collaborative environments.

These three ancient lineages form the foundation of a unique new practice that cultivates trust, connection and playfulness. This workshop will seal in the week-end series through a unique practice that redefines your sense of fun and connection and is open to all.
